What to Expect at Your First Chiropractic Visit

What to Expect at Your First Chiropractic Visit

Your first chiropractic visit will probably last about an hour. During the visit, your chiropractor will want to know several things. They will not start your treatments right away. Take the time to relax. As you answer their questions, also ask your own.

It is helpful to know what to expect on your first chiropractic visit. It will set you at ease with chiropractic care, ensuring you have a good experience. With that said, here are a few things you will experience on that first visit.

Medical History

Like most first visits to medical doctors, the chiropractor will start by taking your medical history. They will want to know about your problem and why you want help. They will also want to know about:

  • All your medical conditions

  • Past injuries

  • Medications you are taking

  • Use of drugs and alcohol

  • Your lifestyle

  • Stress

  • Sleep

All the above things can affect your chiropractic care and how your body responds. The medical history will help them know the severity of your problem. Next, your chiropractor will perform a physical exam.

Physical Exam

After taking your history, the chiropractor will perform physical examinations. They will also include general tests. They will check your pulse, respiration, blood pressure, and reflexes. They will use their hands and eyes to assess your:

  • Range of motion

  • Muscle strength

  • Muscle tone

  • Neurological integrity

  • Posture analysis

If there is a need, the chiropractor will order more diagnostic tests.

Diagnostic Exams

Diagnostic exams depend on your medical history and the chiropractic exam. They will help the chiropractor develop a treatment plan specific to your needs. They will use special equipment to check your body and get a diagnosis. These include X-ray and MRI machines that can diagnose any recent trauma and its progress.

Treatment Plan

Findings from your medical history, physical examination, and diagnostic tests will help your chiropractor develop a specific diagnosis. Once they have a diagnosis, they will develop a treatment plan. They will have an idea of how your body will respond to treatment. They will know what combination of treatments you will need.

At the end of your visit, the chiropractor will explain the diagnosis of your condition. They will explain your treatment and the amount of time they expect chiropractic care to take. After that, they will give you more time to go home, think about it, and do your research. When there is an agreement on treatment right during the first visit, the chiropractor can start treatment right away.

The length of your treatment plan and the treatment options are specific to an individual. The chiropractor may also recommend a maintenance plan at the end of your treatment. They may recommend that you continue with some exercises and occasional spinal manipulations. They will also keep evaluating your progress, adjusting your treatment as required.

The first visit should make you comfortable to continue with your treatment. Make sure you ask any questions you may still have after the chiropractor explains the treatment and maintenance plan.
